It's time to remodel

amarilrose Oct 27, 2008 10:12 PM

Courtney's behavior is telling me I should start looking for a new hidey-hole for him. He's OK for a little bit longer with what he has (a big wad of Spanish moss), but he's a growing 4-year-old, and I can expect he'll need a more permanent solution soon.

What do you guys use for hides for your adult Dum's? I know there can only be a wide variety of responses, but I'd like to hear them.

Thanks,
~Rebecca

For my bigger Dum's, I just crumple up newspaper and lay it around their cages. Most of the time I only see heads sticking ouf from underneath it. I put several pieces at each end of the cage. It's hard to find hides for the larger boas or pythons.

For my 2 small Dum's I use the hollowed out half logs by ZOO Med or T-Rex, plus I put some crumpled newspaper in their tubs also.

My cages are sparsely furnished, for ease of maintenance.

I found that when I used aspen bedding, my smaller Dum's would burrow under it also.

If you have a nicely decorated cage you could probably use some cork bark slabes and make your own custom sized hide.

I like that newspaper idea. I might try that.

For my 6-foot Dum, I have used the following as hides:
-cork bark (big slabs aren't cheap but he likes them)
-a plastic dish-washing basin with a hole cut in one end (reusable and easy to clean)
-peat inserts for large hanging plant baskets (cheap, organic, easy to cut a hole in)

I use cat litter boxes as hides, they are cheap and sturdy. I just flip them upside down and cut out a hole for an entrance and they love it.
