flies in salamander tank

rtopa Nov 05, 2008 07:33 PM

I am having a problem with what look like fruit flies in my Emperor newt tank. I have two Emperor newts in a 20 gallon tank with eco-earth and spangeum moss for a substrate and a spider plant. The salamanders are fine, but there is an excessive amount of flies all over the tank. It is absolutly disgusting and I do not know what to do about it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

clean tank & change substrate. those flies lay eggs in moist places, and there are likely eggs and maggots somewhere in the tank.

try bringing the tank outside and airing it out if its not too heavy to get rid of the majority of the flies and clean the tank i guess. you can also put in a jar of beer (tall enough so the newts can't get in) to attract flies.
