How do you loop a crested

lbratcher4 Jan 01, 2009 05:45 PM

I usually work with snakes but decided to get some crested's and the person I purchased them from was saying he looped them and they were a pair. It was crowded so I didn't ask him what he meant by looping them. If you can explain this method of sexing them to me. Thank you

You use a jewelers loupe and you check for pores on the underside of the geckos. It's somewhat difficult to do if you don't know what your doing. How big are the geckos?

They are about 3 inches from snout to vent.

Yeah, you should definitely be able to loupe them, but it does take some practice. If you go to Pangea, they have a couple loupes on there you can buy, other than that, you can find them on e-bay, but more times than not you are going to have to order it from Hong Kong. If you decide to do it, just search louping crested gecko or something along those lines on google and read what people have to say and I'm sure there will be pics as well. Good Luck

At three inches snout to vent (roughly 5.5" with tail) should be old enough to tell a male without even using a jeweler's loupe. (basically a fancy magnifying glass which fits in the eye. A 8x magnifying glass will work as well). But typically crested geckos when they are 6-9 months old the males have obvious hemipenial bulges past their vent.

neither of them have a bulge so I guess the one he said was male is a female which is fine it wont be hard to get a male. Thanks

There can be late bloomers when it comes to males, so if it's not over a year old, you might want to be sure it's a male by louping it or waiting until it's close to a year old to be sure by the buldge. I have heard many times people thinking they had a female for months and finally the buldge showed up between 0 and 12 months... I personally had one get it's buldge as late as 10 months. Some can take longer than others....
