Video question

JasonW Jan 04, 2009 09:26 AM

I know this is a photo forum but maybe someone can answer my video question. My camera supports 320, 640 and 16:9. I understand what 320 and 640 are but whats 16:9?

16x9 is the wide screen aspect ratio (as opposed to the 4x3 aspect ratio of older TVs.).

So in terms of online viewing via website or youtube is 16.9 better or more desirable than 640?

I'm not a video guy, but as far as I know YouTube and other such sites use a 4:3 aspect ratio so 16:9 wouldn't show well (black borders above and below).
For posting online, I don't think you need very high resolution and you certainly don't want the increased file size.

I'm sure YouTube has a FAQ that answers that stuff.

Ok I got it, I just wanted to post back and say this is what I got from the youtube help section.

Recommended: 1290 x 720 (16x9 HD) and 640 x 480 (4:3 SD)
There is no required minimum resolution - in general the higher resolution the better and HD resolution is preferred. For older content, lower resolution is unavoidable.
