BTS lip thing

Buffysmom Jan 04, 2009 04:39 PM

My 5 month old BTS developed this scale raise in the last 24 hours. Any idea what might be causing it? She eats like a horse & is growing like a weed.

I know it's not easy to do with these guys, but try to get a good look inside its mouth. The raised scute may be nothing, but you want to make sure there's no redness or swelling in the gums underneath that could indicate an infection or abcess.

It wasn't easy to do, but I got a look & pulled off this clear/pale yellow crusty stuff. The scales have since returned to their original position.

My adult BTS gets this on his lips too. My herp vet has looked at it before & isn't too concerned about it, but she said she'll ask her colleagues on the herp vet forums to see if they have any idea why they get it & what to do about it. When I pull it off, the skin underneath (just inside the mouth, on the inside of the lip) looks raw & there is occasionally a trace amount of blood.

Anyone have any idea what it is & how to treat it? The skinks do not share an enclosure & are on different substrates (aspen & paper).

It happens with my skinks at times too. I think (have not verified yet) that it is related to tooth replacement. It typically happens and lasts a few days before the swelling goes down.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's related to humidity. I live in Utah, very dry. I've moved her to bed-a-beast to up the humidity in the enclosure & will see if it helps.

It could be caused from food drying on her lips, try wiping excess food off her mouth after she eats.

Buffysmom Feb 22, 2009 12:44 PM

It appears to have been resolved by an increase in humidity.
