Bay of LA Rosy pics...

Fish_Demon Feb 01, 2009 10:55 PM

Nothing spectacular, just some pics of my 2005 male, Han Solo. With this weird warm weather we've been having lately, the temperature of the house was up to around 70 degrees already so I figured I'd bring the Rosies out of brumation and just get an early start on the year.

Beautiful specimen, love the orange eyes.

I saw your rock hide creations in the post below. Just wanted to add a few comments.

I made a double decker out of wood. The snakes used it, but after using it awhile I see where wood is not the best choice. I moved to rocks much like what you did, and with overhead heating (RHP) the rock hides are very functional. Rosies love cramming themselves into crevices. Tried it with baby Childrens pythons with the same results.

There is a fake rock product out there called something like repti-tiles are similar name. These are fake rocks that look great and are made of a expanded resin-type material that heats up alot like sandstone does. For small snakes, these fake rocks work wonders and are much less the weight of real rock. Too small for larger rosies unfortunately.

I'll also mention PVC pipe. Milksnakes and kings in my care relish PVC pipe as hide spots. Young rosies do too.

Thanks for the ideas... That's one thing I was worried about when gluing the rocks together was the weight. They are glued pretty firmly, but I think I did it in such a way that even if the glue didn't hold, the rocks wouldn't fall on the snake and hurt it (they would stay in that position even if they weren't glued).

I've been thinking about a way to heat the rocks, but the snakes are kept in tubs so I don't know how I would do that.

Nice lookin snake.
I've got a male rosy named Han Solo as well. My 7 year old son helped with that one. Its a whitewater albino and is het for borrego anery.

I have another male that is identical. You guessed it, Luke Skywalker.

For some reason I can't get images to show up in the post, so I'll try a link.

Sweet! Yours is the first snake (Rosy or otherwise) besides mine I know of who's named Han Solo. Pictures of yours would be great.

I don't have any Luke Skywalkers, but I do have a Vader (Mexican Black King), a Chewbacca (California King), and a Greedo (female Kenyan).

And, uh, another female Kenyan named Optimus Prime...

(The rest of my snakes don't have names for some reason.)

When you said warm weather, I figured you must be somewhere in California (or the southwest or Fla.) then I saw your SF Bay area @ the bottom of your post. 70 degree winters are nice. Good looking Mexican Boa. Where'd you get him? I've got a normal WW male.

Yep, I'm near San Francisco... Our normal temperatures this time of the year are supposed to be in the 30s - 50s, though (that's still nothing compared to other parts of the country!)... Water rationing begins in a couple weeks from what I've been hearing on the news.

I got Han Solo from a reptile store where I worked while I was still in high school, but I'm pretty sure he was originally bred by the East Bay Vivarium in Berkeley (that's what I was told, anyway).

Whitewaters are awesome... I've been interested in some of the California localities but I'm not sure of the legal issues when it comes to buying them within the state.

You can BUY and OWN as many captive bred California native reptiles as you want. the ONLY issue is having Wild Caught specimens, you can ONLY keep a maximum of TWO and you shoud have a valid fishing license to be on the safe side for the two wild caughts (NOT saying you have any, just stating what CA Fish and Game told me personally)

ALSO keep ALL receipts from the STORE or BREEDER you buy Captive Bred California native Snakes/reptiles. For ANY person to sell legally Captive bred Cali Native reptiles they HAVE TO have a permit and HAVE TO put THEIR RA# on a numbered receipt. T?his EVEN goes for buying Native california Snakes/Reptiles from an outside of California Breeder, they either need to have a California Reptile Propogation Permit or NOT sell to California.

Fish_Demon Feb 06, 2009 01:03 AM

Aren't only a few types of CA native snakes legal to buy or sell at all, though? I think I read somewhere that California Kingsnakes and Rosy Boas are legal to sell (and maybe a couple other ones)... But if I wanted to buy something like a California Red-Sided Garter, that would illegal under just about any circumstance (whether the snake was LTC or CB, the seller was in California or another state, had permits and stuff, etc). Same for Rubber Boas... I don't think there is any way for a hobbyist in California to purchase them legally, even if they are from a population originating in another state.

I just found a PDF of the laws here: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/pdffiles/fg1502.pdf

It looks like only California Kings, Pacific Gopher Snakes, and Rosy Boas are legal for trade.

Yes as far I as read there ONLY Ca.rosy's, Ca. gopher snakes, and Ca. kingsnakes are able to be bought, sold, or Permitted with the Native reptile propogation permit. The ONLY other exception is ANY albino snake/reptile is exempt from F&G regulations. I asked about someone selling a Albino Western diamondback ratlesnake since W.D.B's are not on the list. I was told that because it is a albino it is legal.

What kind of Rosie is that. It greatly resembles mine. Funny Han Solo was a name I cosidered before going with another Harrison Ford character Indiana Jones. Great looking Rosie by the way.
