New Red Foot Tortoise

Stephanie55 Feb 10, 2009 12:13 AM

Just got a Red Foot and have a question about how much he should weigh. He is 3.5 inches and weighs 100 grams, his hatch date was July 2008. To me he feels on the light side. Saturday and Sunday he ate greens, Monday I gave him chopped apple and banana's, today greens again. He seems to eat okay, though not a lot. I have only been feeding him once per day but was wondering if I should offer him an evening meal too, at least till he is older.

Have you seen this site? Go to the top of the page and look under diet. There are pictures showing you how much to feed at every age.

He is very nice and will answer all your questions. Look at the pictures of his Redfoots. They are beautiful.

Scott.....I think you are confused. My name is TerryO and his name is Terry K. We are two different people. I have a Cherry Head, which I did not get from him...but he has been very helpful to me with it's care, since it is my first Tortoise and that is why I recommended his site.

Hi, just for reference. I have a baby redfoot that is exactly 3.5 inches long and weighs 133g. I think they are variable in weight and their weight will also vary before and after eating/pooping. If it is eating well I would weigh again in a few weeks and see where you stand.

Thanks, Gibbs is now at 106 grams. Slow but some gain.
Here is a link to my webshots where I have posted a few photos of him.

This is what "ours" look like following the diet TerryO suggested.. http://redfoots.com/smf/index.php?topic=913.0

I've never weighed mine.. so I don't know what a good weight is. I've always gone by the SCL [ straight carapace lenght ]. Again this is based on my hatchlings following the diet amounts on Redfoots.com. 3" @ 6 months.. 4" @ 12 months.. 5" @ 18 months.. typical.

As usual - there are always exceptions and extremes!
