Ahaetulla nasuta care

Shadowwolf Jul 12, 2009 02:32 AM

Who has experience with these guys?

I recently inherited one and was interested in any info you could give me on them that might help me out a bit. Ideal cage size, heat, humidity requirements, and especially any tips or tricks for feeding? I want him to be happy and healthy, my sanity is of little concern

Thanks!

All vine snakes require pretty much the same set up. 24 X 24 X 36 high natural set up will satisfy their space requirements. I have never seen a vine snake drink from a water dish, have one in the enclosure for humidity, and mist the snake twice daily to ensure that it will drink. If you want an easy way out set up an automatic misting system. These guys require 80-100% humidity, and a temp of 80 - 90. UVB light is debatable but it cant hurt. Feeding is a breeze. These guys love day active lizards, I have had success with brown/green anoles and long tailed grass lizards. House geckos tend to hide during the day and are harder for these guys to find. Feed one to two appropriate sized lizards once a week. Make sure that the enclosure is heavily planted with either real or fake plants, and use a substrate that holds water, coco husk works well. Vine snakes are very alert and responsive when they settle in, they recognize the "lizard cup" and will get visibly excited when they know food is coming. Good Luck with your new guy.

Hi Rob, Have you ever had any luck with scented f/t pinkies with the vine snakes?

Shadowwolf Jul 13, 2009 10:37 AM

A good question, Dan... How can you try and switch these guys over? I have heard of wrapping a pinkie in shed lizard skin, cutting the pinkie and inserting a lizard tail (or other part), or getting a lizard to slobber all over a pinkie beforehand... Do these tactics ever work?

Some Ahaetulla spec. accept pinkies when they are living and moving. Most of them will refuse mice. This is for prasina and nasuta.
There are some Ahaetulla spec incl. prasina and mycterizans hunting fishes. If you are really lucky your tricks will work, but you have to look for other possibilities.

That's really interesting about some of the Ahaetullas taking fish.
This may seem macabre to some, but I'm amazed that with today's technology we haven't figured out a way to make a paste/spray made up of feeder lizards to get our finicky types of snakes to start taking rodents. I'm not sure if it would have to be 100% lizard or just a much lower percentage for it to work.
I could imagine someday having a toad and lizard jar of "paste" available to brush onto the nose of a pinkie. I don't think many people have a problem accessing some sort of fish so we may not need that one.
It wouldn't need to be a very large jar/bottle; just enough to get our snakes taking rodents.
Do you know if anyone has attempted this?
I'm retired and have the time to experiment, but I just don't have the assets or advanced education to know what to use as a filler to reduce percentage of scent-animal to minimum required.
Almost like a "pinkie press" without being 100% pinkie, huh?
Just another idea...

In germany is one product available called "lizard-maker"
But it seems that it doesn´t work.
Your idea may work. You can sometimes scent mice with frog or lizard.

Unfortunately, never. I have a 6 foot Prasina that is large enough but is not interested. They seem to be more visually based and not so much scent based hunters. I have heard of people doing it... Good Luck

Hi,

i have 2-2 A. nasuta for 2 years now. If they are in good shape it's not so hard to take care of them. But you have to be sure that you can always get lizards/gekko's because that's what they eat. I have 2 Nasuta eatings live pinky's, no need to scent them. If you have good lively pinky's the change is good that they will eat them. The 2 that eat pinky's eat 1 a week, without any problems.
Succes!
