Update on my winter guest

Urojade Oct 26, 2009 08:41 PM

He is eating VERY well on guppies and small worms. He does spend all his time looking for a way out of his cage but he's comfortable enough that he tries to take the food from me before it hits the ground so I think he's going to do okay.

Is it possible that he'll get used to his food coming to him and not do well when I let him out in the spring?

And some advice on his setup would be helpful, I had him in this small, plain setup to see if he was eating. Should I upgrade him now that I know he is? He'll be getting better hides but should he be in something larger? Maybe a branch or decorations to give him more cover?

I'm not sure what kind he is.

Good looking animal. The set-up is fine. I never trusted those critter keeper lids though. I am old fashioned and keep baby snakes in the ole' gallon jar.

My only advice would be to add a "hot spot" for thermoregulation. I keep my snakes in relatively simple setups and favor "Kritter Cages" for smaller snakes. Here are a pair of garters that I produced this Summer (pic below).

Your snake looks like an Eastern Garter, but knowing the location (city, state) where it was found will lead to a more positive ID.

It's hard to say if a snake would get so used to being fed that it would no longer hunt if released back into the wild.

Your snake may be a maritime garter. Where was it found?
If not, I'd say eastern.
