snake breed question

akc90 Dec 28, 2009 02:26 PM

hey everyone

i'm looking to find another snake here in the next month. i've had corn and garter snakes as a kid, and i now have a ball python. i want to get a snake that's 8 feet or under, but i'm not sure what breed. i've been looking at columbian red-tails, rainbow boas, and blood pythons. does anyone have any suggestions? i do live in Florida, so if the python ban does pass, i don't want to end up with a snake i'll just have to get rid of.

thanks! hope you enjoy the holiday season

as far as the ban it would only ban the interstate travel and import/export of the animal. Which pretty much means you can keep the animal sell and breed in your own state but if you move it would be a fellony to bring the animal with you. with the animals you listed the only one that would be included in this ban would be the Columbian RTB.

I keep all 3 species that you named and love them all. its really what you like better. Bloods so a terestrial species so while handling you have to suport it's body, dont count on it to hold on to you for suport. they've very stout and very powerful but in my mind one of my most fav species I've worked with.

Rainbow boas to mine are one of the most beautiful species. of course they dont get the girth like a blood will and stay rather slender. a Semi arboreal species so it'll hold on to you while you handle it and mine like to just explore while I have them out.

Columbian RTB's can get bigger then 8'and quite heavy. so if your wanting it to be under 8' you have better chances getting a male. There's all sorts of color and pattern morphs so you have a wide variety of choices with them.

thank you, Zach.

i looked at some hog island boas, not quite the same as the CRTBs, but still nice. i'd be going more towards those since they're a little smaller.i love bloods.. i like their girth, not too big of a fan of the skinny snakes. i've heard good and bad things about bloods.. i met a guy that didn't like bloods but he had carpet pythons and loved them, and vice versa. i personally think i'd really like them. rainbows are really pretty.. again, i like the thicker snakes though.

i love my ball, but i think i'm just looking for anything more colorful and bigger than my ball. of course, it all ends up on me and what i prefer. but mainly it's just the snakes that'll get between 5-8 feet, bigger girth, and are easier on the eyes, lol. i've heard bloods are a little more difficult to take care of, but i feel like it wouldn't be all that difficult if you've had a snake before and learn about them beforehand. i'm leaning towards the blood, or a smaller breed of the CRTB

I think bloods are great, we also keep JCP's and Bloods are still my fav. my advice if you get a blood is get from a good breeder and look at what the parents look like, gives you a better idea how it'll turn out.
