Living on a 20 acre farm, my Stars are kept in a large 12'portable enclosure in summer with all the fresh hey to their heart's desire. BUT in the winter, I make sure my tortoises' enclosure is lined with timothy hey. I also slice vegetables for them. Getting Mazuri or Rep-Cal's Tortoise food- which they Love is a pain- I have to drive from MA to CT where it is sold by a mom pop pet store. Tortoise food at Petco is limited and expensive. That's when I noticed the ingredients in the parrot food: dried apple, mango, green peas, red&green peppers, tomatoes, carrots, celery, beets, watercress, spinach, corn, soybean meal; and it smells like Rep-Cal's Tortoise food too. What are the thoughts about Parrot food for supplementing my sri lankan star? Where can I get Mazuri- on line not needing PayPal?

IDK about the parrot food but you can get mazuri from a feed store that carrys Purina. Not all feed stores carry Purina as there is some sort of a deal where there has to be so many miles between dealers. So just find the feed store that carrys purina and they can order it if they do not have it already.

Where in MA do you live, eastern or western? If you are in eastern MA and north of Boston, you could go to NERD in Plaistow, NH and get Mazuri there. Plaistow is just over the border from Haverhill, MA and very easily reached from I-495. It's only a couple of miles up Rte 125 (Exit 51 off 495). Kevin (the owner) used to sell it in small quantities and sent it out via UPS too. Maybe he has grown beyond that now, but you could certainly call and ask. Call 603-382-2772 and speak with Kara. She was most recently in charge of dry goods orders to my knowledge.

The parrot feed doesn't sound too bad, either. The parrot feed ingredients may not be in exactly the percentages that would be optimal for tortoises as those in Mazuri would be, though.

I live in Western MA- and I will try the purina dealer route. I will call the NERD # Too ;o)

Strange coincidence, but I am from northwestern CT (town of Sharon). What town in MA are you from? I relocated to GA in 2002, but still go back to the area frequently to visit family and enjoy some peace and quiet. I usually stay in Great Barrington when I am up there nowadays.

Meanwhile, I noticed that Kevin McCurley now has a separate web site for his NERD pet store (which is called Zoo Creatures Pet Store). If you search it on the web, you will find it. It is pretty interesting.

I am from Westfield- I travel to Avon to get the Tortoise Rep Cal food from Harris in Wonderland. Great Barrington is a wonderful town. Very Pretty!

Westfield to Avon! That's a good ride.I'm on the S. Shore and there's a few feed stores around that will order it with no problem at all.

I'm sure there's a few out your way that could help you out as well.Would be nice to not have to drive all the way to Avon.

Stars are going to be my next addition come spring time.I was wondering if anyone else kept them up here in the N.E.
I'm gonna have some garage cleaning and wife convince'n to do to have a nice winter set up for them thou.20 acres would quickly become my personal zoo...Aldabra time!!!!

I will try the feed stores and request special ordering. I went to Dave's Pet & Soda, he was able to get the RepCalTortoise food, however I am impressed with the history of Mazuri's feed plus my SLStars really enjoy the Mazuri in winter. I adore my stars, they really have funny personalities! My little female- Barbra, likes to chase my chihuahua.

Hi, if there is an Agway near you call them and ask them if they can get thye Mazuri. I used to be able to get it at Ellington Agway in CT but they lost their distributor. I have some for now and am hoping that the Manchester, CT Agway can get me some when I run out.

Wasn't T-Rex going to sell Mazuri packaged as their own? I thought I saw that at Daytona in 2008. Ed Pirog was their spokesperson. I wish T-Rex would market it as it would be easier to get some to hold us thru til we can get the big bags...

Was it a Pretty Pet's (or Pretty Bird) product? I think they make bird food along with tortoise and other reptile foods.

I've used the Pretty Pets tortoise food and my russians seem to like it alot.

If a store carries one Pretty Pet/Pretty Bird product, they might be willing to order the Tortoise food for you.

Hi bradtort,
i appreciate your expertise. My stars had pretty pals feed when they were little. The canister is so expensive and they'd go through that is less then a week! I will try the feed stores with special ordering Mazuri- hope they'll be able to oblige.

Makes sense. I think 3lbs is the largest container they sell.

I've used Mazuri and RepCal before.
