Rescue and release Fiji Boa

helenthereef Jan 12, 2010 09:19 PM

Just had a large female Candoia bibroni bibroni brought in via a conservation organisation.

It had been rescued from a development area, and by some miracle, by someone who DIDN'T think that the right thing to do with a snake was slash it with a machete or pull its teeth out with a stick.

Anyway it was a healthy female, with unusually dark colouration. It took some willpower (and nagging by a conservation-minded partner I have to admit), but i did NOT succumb to the temptation to keep her. After examination and photography we drove her to a less disturbed area and released her into the rainforest, where I'm sure she'll be much happier.

Just thought I'd share photos...

I know, I know.... but she's really better off in the wild. Greed was battling ethics for quite a while there.....

Beautiful snake Helen!

I looks like she had could have been gravid aswell, if you lookt at the pics there's an obvious swelling in the 3/4 of her body.

Good luck with the other female!

Hi Matt,

I was trying not to believe that - I had wondered when I was handling her, and my greed increased - but again I think her babies would probably be better off born in the wild, keeping our rainforests populated.

Anyway I'm glad to hear that you thought the same thing, it will help me to recognise it when (hopefully) Thomasina starts to show...

WOW! I MEAN WOW, that was one good looking snake, have seen them like that before?

helenthereef Jan 18, 2010 09:01 PM

Most of the snakes I've seen here have been various shades of brown, but I've seen variants in silver/grey, black and white (like this girl), greenish, yellow, and solid black with a bright red belly.

Have a look at these three, wild caught on Taveuni Island, all natural variants of Candoia bibroni bibroni:

Helen, I'd say you probably did the right thing. I don't know how you were able to, but good for you. Hopefully the ones you are working with will reward you for your hard decision.
