?? Dwarf Caiman x Dwarf Crocodile ??

glz Jan 14, 2010 07:38 PM

I know its never been done, but im wondering if its possible to produce hybrid offspring from a breeding such as this.

Dwarf Caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus) x Dwarf Crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis).

I know in supposedly its not possible because they are from differant genus BUT crocodilians are very closely related. And we have seen hybrids produced by other types of animals from differant genus.

So what do you think?

I doubt it's possible because it's not just two different genus but different familys. Caiman are part of the alligator family and the croc is of course part of the croc family. It could be possible but highly unlikely, both families seperated from each other way before the dinosaurs went extinct so they've been diverging from each other for atleast 65million years.

Yeah thats what I figure also, I know of a american gator and a nile croc that mated for years but never took, also a friend in Ohio has a cougar and leopard that mate but never take.

I just thought it would be cool if such a hybrid could be done, plus it would make things easy for me as I cant seem to get a hold of a breedable male Osteoleamus, not to mention it would make the offspring available outside my state.

Maybe ill still try it ....

I know this is starting to go off topic but I know puma x leopard hybrids are possible, they are called pumards and I've seen atleast 1picture online. So if that's what your friend is aiming for tell him he should keep trying, they'll take eventually hopefully.

hmm ... actually I havent talked to the guy in probably 12 or so years (since I got out of keeping exotic cats). Its very possible that he has produced them, maybe even the ones you saw. He was a really big breeder from Stoney Ridge Ohio (right by cedar point).

He has thousands of these to play with ... some would be interesting like the rhombifer x novaguine'a, i think these would be gorgeous!

Plus most of these hybrids would never be allowed to import into the USA except the hybrids that contain a cites 2 species like the novaguinea
