Toxicity Question

AllenSheehan Jan 27, 2010 05:56 PM

I recently moved into a home that is loaded with Indian Hawthorn and Nandina bushes. I have noticed they are dropping thousands of berries in the yard where my sulcata and leapord tortoises will live when the weather warms. Does anyone know if these are for sure toxic or not? I am reading mixed results when I do my own searches.

Thanks for any feedback
Allen Sheehan

Hi Allen,

My tortoise yards have a few Nandina bushes planted in them. The tortoises I have here have never had any problems from eating the leaves or little fruits. They also eat the fruit off the Inkberry bushes (holly) with no trouble.

I don't know about the hawthorn, so cannot comment on that one.
