Garter ID help - red spotted...

mikem Apr 07, 2010 09:41 PM

i received a few red spotted female garters. one female has one stripe. one female has three stripes.

the other female has three blue stripes. she has little to no reds on her at all. just blue. she does have a very very slight pinkish blush on the sides near the corners of her mouth. her spots are a light blue.

what would you call this color morph?

and are the three stripes common or not in this species?

sorry, no pics. thanks for answering!

well... pictures are an absolute must whed attempting to ID snakes. I have seen many red spots with three stripes. the one with blue sounds like it may be an intergrade.

i'll do my best to get some photos of her in the next day or so, need to get a battery for my camera, then i'll be back

okay, found some batteries to use for a couple pics. not the greatest, but i think they get the point across. you can see her spots are actually a light pink in the photos, must be the lighting and/or my eyes in the room that made them look blueish. they are obviously a light pink here. thanks for looking!

Well once thing I will say is that is NOT a red spotted garter.... but it's lovely! It looks like a pickeringii (puget sound) and there are red and blue phase pugets, that one is either a mix of those two phases or she is an intergrade between a red pot and a puget.... or a valley and a puget.... or something! It's imposssible to actually know. where on earth did you get those that they sent you that as a red spotted garter?!

i'm completely ignorant on these red spotted garters. i thought i might have stumbled onto something new, haha. i'd rather not give names. the person i purchased from doesn't really deal in garters and probably didn't know either.

one more shot of that girl going into her hide:

here's the rest of the group i received:

i really like the last one! haha. send her to me when you are ready

mikem Apr 08, 2010 12:25 PM

so would that be a definite red spotted on those other three pictured? thanks shannon

mikem Apr 08, 2010 12:27 PM

well, the last female pictured. i know the two pictured together are red spotted. thanks

mikem Apr 08, 2010 01:19 PM

the reason i ask is because she is more colorful than the two together. i guess it's the extra stripes that make her stand out!

asnakelovinbabe Apr 08, 2010 10:41 PM

The two that are pictures together is a 1.1 pair of red spots. the last one... it's kind of weird... concinnus can still have lateral stripes but that one's got some funky color going on... reminds me of a redsided. Truthfully, there is absolutely no way to tell if they are actually pure or not... but whatever the case she's very pretty!

The first one appear to be pickeringii and not a red spot at all. especially now that I am looking at it again. If you are interested in moving it out because it's not a red spot or for any reason at all.... I'd be interested in it heck I'll trade you an adult female red spot for it.(no pressure of course just throwing it out there!)

i'll send you a pm in a little bit and we can talk. i've got a few things to do today, so it may be tonight before i get back with you. take care.

I had a similar snake sent to me as a red spot a few years ago.I first thought it was a concinnus x pickeringii but after a lot of research I beleive it's pretty much just a fitchi. The coloration could just be a locale thing
