Ambon Island locale

chrisdrake Apr 23, 2010 06:07 PM

I'm just curious if the Ambon Island locale is a new locale to be imported? I've never seen ambon island mentioned until now. I just bought a pair and will be here on Weds. From what I understand they are just an island locale of carinata carinata. What i've been told they are reddish in color and slightly larger than the mainland form. Supposedly they are not as variable in color as the mainland. If anybody has more info on these guys please share. It would be much appreciated. Thanks,

Chris

Hi, Chris. I'll try to answer it. I dont know about the new locale to be imported thing, but in here, Indonesia, there are a lot Carinata-carinata from Ambon island. From what I know, it has a cream color.

About the reddish color, Jayapura carinata-carinata sometimes has reddish color too. And about the size, all carinata-carinata have the same size I think (unless for the male, it's smaller than the female). Which is larger than carinata-carinata is candoia paulsoni tasmai. Sometimes people oftenly mistaken because of the same look when the paulsoni still small. But when paulsoni gets bigger, people will see the difference on the head shape. Besides, paulsoni has different colors on the under neath it's body than carinata-carinata.

But back to the basic, since there's only a little information available about candoia family, I think sometimes people make mistake about the locality that seen from the color, pattern thing. So forgive me if I'm wrong

Sorry for my poor english...

chrisdrake Apr 24, 2010 09:30 AM

Thanks for your reply and your english is pretty good by the way. I will post some pics when I get them. I've heard only one importer got this locale in here in the states. Whether that is true or not I don't know. I've seen one add for them and talked to another that had just got some in and those are the ones I'm getting. He says the female is of typical size of the mainland and that the male is about 2ft and they are both reddish in color with a little more pronounced zigzag pattern down the back. Can't wait to see them.

chrisdrake Apr 28, 2010 08:03 PM

Well the ambons came in today but unfortunately neither were alive. FedEx screwed me around about the delivery and its 85 degrees here and they were shipped with a heat pack. Didn't get them until 6:30 and as soon as i opened the box the smell hit me. I have to admit they look more like paulsoni than carinata. alot thicker and longer than mainland carinatas. I guess I could pull them out of the freezer and photograph them.

daneby Apr 28, 2010 09:16 PM

Oh man that sucks! I was looking forward to seeing them too. Is the guy you got them from all out of them now? If not maybe he will send you replacements since its part his fault for not paying attention to temps.

Dan

daneby Apr 28, 2010 09:36 PM

Chris,

It seems you are buying up some candoia lately, & if youde like to know who some of the guys ive had good experiences with are & some of the guys ive got crap from when it comes to candoia email me & I'll let you know. Cleaning up WC candoia inside & out can be a real chore anyway, but it makes it worse when you get them from someone who doesnt take care of them properly while in their care, & unfortunetly usually the only way to find out about someone is to take a chance & buy from them, so if I can help let me know.

Dan

andry122 Apr 29, 2010 01:46 AM

You're right dan. Carinata can get a worm easily if the cage ot the food is dirty. Well I dont know if u call it worm at ur place. But it's like a little acne under the skin. We call it worm in here.

I'm sorry for ur loss chris Maybe u should buy it from trusted seller who knows how to pack, and ask for guarantee :D Thats what I always do.

jerryconway Apr 29, 2010 07:15 AM

CAN YOU TELL US WHO THE SELLER IS?....AND YES, PLEASE TAKE A FEW PICS...I NEVER USE HEAT PACKS...THEY CAN BE BAD NEWS....JC

chrisdrake Apr 29, 2010 04:51 PM

I have to admit I need to take some of the blame and fedex the majority of the blame. I had to take my daughter to the sitter and stopped at the corner store before the snakes arrived. Apparently in the short time I was gone fedex tried to deliver. I had left a sign on the door asking for them to leave the package at the door and that i would be back shortly and signed it just in case i missed them while i was gone. The shipper had set it up to require a signature so they did not leave it. The fedex tag they put on the door apparently fell off the door and ended up behind a potted plant so I did not know they tried to deliver. After 10:30 I couldn't wait anymore so I went to work but had my neighbor watch out for them. After a few hours she went and checked my doorstep just in case they got in without her seeing and she found the doortag. She called me and I ran home as soon as i could. I got on the phone with fedex at 2pm to find out where the driver was and if he could redeliver or I could meet him on his route. I stressed they were live reptiles and I really needed to get them. I was told they would call me back if there were any problems with a redeliver. 5pm and nothing so I called them back. The driver was not responding so at 6pm i had to go pick them up at the station. I was told twice i would get a callback on the drivers status and never did. I feel i'm partly to blame for missing the delivery, and fedex is to blame for poor customer service. they sat on the truck 4hrs longer because the driver wouldn't respond to their messages. If they weren't packed with a heat pack they may have survived our 84 degree day but if i recieved them at 10:30 it wouldn't have been that hot. What a mess. They were packed well other than the heatpack. I don't want to throw the dealers name out there because they are trying to help rectify the situation. The snakes were very nice looking animals and clean. I will post some pics later.

So sorry to hear about that,I wish I had found this site sooner. This is my first post ever on any site so hi everyone.A--122 IS correct,Ambon Island Locale appear to be candoia paulsoni tasmai from Ambon island. They do look quite different though. They seem longer and not as stout. They also have smaller heads and much smaller eyes.At least the males do,Thats why Im posting this CHRIS can you please say where you got yours.I ended up with two males and would give my eye teeth for a female but I cant find one anywhere.PLEASE HELP!!!

jerryconway May 15, 2010 10:35 AM

JENNI, WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR 2 MALES FROM?....WHERE DO YOU LIVE?....JERRY

liljenni May 15, 2010 05:18 PM

Hey Jerry,Wow thanks for returning my post.I just got a new house and now have room for snakes so Ive been trying to assemble a small group of various candoia.I recieved a trio of beautiful solomon islands(one issabelle female)in a trade(for an african rock python)way back in early 80s.This was in Virginia.I moved out here to Oregon. But before I did I sold all my nice reptiles as I had no real home. Now of course I wish I hadnt.I got my Ambons from Jim Tracy at tracyreptileco..nice guy.I know jack about computers, but I do have a decent digital camera so if I can figure this out maybe Ill post some pictures. Thanks Again JENNI/

jerryconway May 15, 2010 08:00 PM

THATS GREAT JENNI...I'VE HEARD OF JIM TRACY, BUT NEVER DEALT WITH HIM BEFORE...I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR AMBON PHOTOS...HAVE A NICE WEEKEND...JERRY

liljenni May 19, 2010 01:06 AM

HI JERRY, Started a thread on fauna classifieds board of Inc.I got burned a few months ago by ken foosj-exotc pets(sent me a male after I allready bought a male from him)supposed to send a female Its getting pretty popular still near the top.Anyway I thought you should read some of it as you are mentioned. Also since we dont know each other you could give me your real opinion.I'm kinda new to mail order snakes.Everyone there seems to think Im in the wrong. Thanks Jenni

helenthereef May 19, 2010 05:08 AM

Hi Jenni,

I don't want to hijack this thread with a debate about Fauna Classified's Board of Inquiry issues, but the BOI over there can get pretty heated, as posts can affect people's reputations and business.

If you are going to make claims about a sale that went wrong, you really should try and post some kind of proof. In your case I'd suggest photos of the snakes and the spurs. If you don't feel like doing that I'd just walk way from that debate, because it isn't going to get any better...

And if you are coming over to Fiji, email me and I can make some suggestions on places you should visit if you want to see Fiji Boas

liljenni May 19, 2010 07:28 AM

Hey Helen,THANK YOU-again.I'm not concerned.I've been trying to assemble some snakes to breed in the future. So I've bought almost every solomon island ground offered for sale on kingsnake in the last four months(maybe all of them)except the rest of Ken's.And I expect problems when getting them, and have not been disapointed.Once I figure how to post pictures, you'll see what I mean.Like supposed cb animals arriving covered in weird looking ticks.Seller photos posed so you cant see the missing tail.I have another suposed hold back "baby" thats three feet long and I'm pretty sure carried around by a dog, also with ticks and mites, broken ribs puncture wounds-really like a dog had it.Two males instead of 1.1-Literally everyone has pulled something except one guy,who was a private seller. So I'm kinda over it.I only posted that stuff about Ken to piss him off, like he pissed me off.Not to resolve anything.I couldnt care less about the money,I just wanted him to know that I know hes a scammer. As for all his snake dealing buddies well lets just say It attracts a certain type.Maybe thats what it takes to keep these pittiful little buisnesses going in todays economy.I dont know. Sorry if this sounds harsh ,but its the truth.REALLY THANKS SO MUCH/

jerryconway May 19, 2010 07:57 AM

I AVOID FAUNA CLASSIFIEDS LIKE THE PLAGUE JENNI....THAT SITE IS FILLED WITH PSYCHOS AND LOSERS WHOSE MAIN GOAL IN LIFE IS TO BADMOUTH ANYONE AND EVERYONE REGARDLESS OF THE SITUATION...DO YOURSELF A FAVOR....STAY ON KINGSNAKE...CHECK OUT MY ADS ON KINGSNAKE "OTHER BOAS" SECTION....MY PHONE NUMBER IS IN THOSE ADS....GIVE ME A CALL IF YOU'D LIKE....JERRY

liljenni May 19, 2010 08:52 AM

Hey Jerry,Hi I'm not at all trying to drag you into this.I did want you to know that I referenced the Candoia Page in responce to someone telling me all boas have "spurs" and that I must be very inexperienced.I was just having fun with some guy that ripped me off by selling me a male as a female like I was to stupid to notice.I'm sick of getting burned. These were all folks on kingsnake though.I really apriceate(i cant spell in case you hav'nt noticed)you getting back to me and for writing the candoia book in the first place its grate. And yes what a bunch of crazys I've never seen anything quite like that before, still tons of fun making them freak out.Thank you again ever so much.JENNI/

andry122 May 20, 2010 11:04 PM

That really sucks Jen. In here there are some sellers like that too. They post photos which no one can notice the badness of the snakes. I hope you can find a good seller in there.

Btw, contrary to ur condition, it's so hard to find the male ones in here. I always got females

Well, sorry for my bad english.

pensil May 21, 2010 03:35 AM

Same situation with me..In Indonesia, Its really difficult to get male candoia..

liljenni May 21, 2010 07:02 AM

Hi Andry122, They are all doing much better now. Most wild caught snakes probably go through hell before they make it here.Even the people who catch them in the first place sometimes harm them in doing so.The man I got the Ambon males from e-mailed me today. He found me a female Ambon.I am very exited. It will be here on Tuesday. Your english is very good.I was very sad to hear of those other Ambons not making it through the mail. THANKS Jenni/

andry122 May 21, 2010 10:23 PM

Hi, jen. I'm concerned about ur problem Anyway, can't u find a petshop that sells carinata? I think it's better if u come to the petshop and pick it by yourself. Well, I can't wait to see ur new ambon :D Post it here, please when u have it. OK? :D

liljenni May 21, 2010 11:48 PM

HI ANDRY122,I have been to many pet shops over the years.I have only seen carinata 1 time.About half of Americans are very very scared of snakes.Carinata is not commonly kept here. Most people here have never seen one ..or heard of them.If they saw snakes as good as ur carinata, they would be more popular. What color is the under-side of ur grey carinata? I LOVE ur pictures. Thanks for posting them!! Jenni/

liljenni May 21, 2010 07:09 AM

HEY JERRY SAW A RED VIPER BOA FROM JIM TRACY ON THE CLASSIFIEDS-IM SURE YOU DID TOO HI ANYWAYS Jenni/
