raspy breathing and watery eyes

dpjm May 17, 2010 11:52 AM

Hi everyone. I am relatively new to red foots and have a couple questions. I work in a facility with two red foots and both are displaying the same symptoms - watery eyes and raspy breathing. The watery eyes are quite noticeable. The breathing is not so loud, but when you put your ear near their heads you can hear raspy breathing from both of them. I have been told that raspy breathing is normal for red foots, but I don't believe this to be true, especially considering the low humidity (15-25%)they are kept at. I am a bit concerned there may be a respiratory infection developing, although there is no nasal discharge. Can anyone shed some light here? Thanks.

Hey,
The humidy is too low. My redfoot's eyes water when the humidy gets low. I use cypress mulch ,which holds water well. I also mist them and their pen daily. You may find the breathing will clear up with higher humidy levels. If not get them to a Vet.
