Crested Gecko Weighing?

sorazme May 24, 2010 02:48 PM

I always see on websites and hear from people that crested geckos should be certain weight before breeding like, 35 grams. But how do you weigh them? What do you use to weigh them? Where can you get one? Thx for any help.

any household/kitchen scale that can weigh in 1 gram increments is suitable.

THe easiest way to weigh a gecko (and most animals that don't sit still on their own) is to put them into a container of some sort. Before you put the animal in the container, weight it first, with lid, so you can 'zero' out the scale. Then place your gecko into the container, close the lid and the weight that shows on the scale is the weight of the gecko.

if the scale you buy doesn't have a 'zero out' feature (I am pretty sure they all do, whether its a digital scale or not) you can just substrate the container's weight from the total.

What I use to weight my geckos is a digital scale that measures in grams. I put a container usually a deli cup then hit the TARE button on my scale. It subtracts the weight of the deli cup and changes it back to 0. I then just put the gecko in the deli cup and weight it. If for some reason you get a scale w/o the TARE button you just weight the container, then weight the gecko inside the container, and just subtracted the containers empty weight from that of the weight with the gecko inside of it. I got mines at a local store. If you can't find it locally you can always order one online the only site off the top of my head I would recommend is ebay, but you can do a quick google search and find one. I paid $25 for mines. GL finding one & I hope my post helps.

you can find good digital kitchen scales at stores like 'linens and things','bed, bath, and beyond',etc.you can find cheaper, low quality ones at most pawn shops(drug dealers need scales, too),or occasionally at walmart.you can always go old school and triple-beam the sucker, too.

triple=beam scales are very expensive though, as they are designed to be very accurate, probably more so than most mid ranged digital scales.

A typical digital scale that weighs in 1g increments are not that expensive...usually around $25, maybe less if they are on sale. I have seen them at Walmart, HomeDepot and pretty much anywhere that sells kitchen products.
