Boamaster 4x2 Cage and my Dumerils

Scottico Jun 23, 2010 08:34 PM

I recently purchased a 6-foot Dumerils along with a Boamaster 4x2 plastic cage. I like the cage, but I'm concerned that my snake could "lift and push out" one of the sliding doors. I have four children under the age of ten, including a 3-year old.

I put a metal lock on the doors to keep them from opening; but I can still place my hands on one door, lift up and then pull out to remove the door--even if the lock is secure.

I've tried to do the same from the inside of the cage where the snake is and with some work, I can get the door to come out. Now I'm worried that the snake could do the same.

For those of you who have kept snakes for a while--and have actually seen or own a Boamaster plastic cage--do you think it's possible for a snake to get out as I described above?

Depending on the size of the glass and track, you can use a pencil or pen and slide it over the top of the closest piece of glass. That should prevent the glass from slipping the track. I have never used boamaster caging so i don't know the exact setup.

Having kept corn and king snakes, what I can tell you is that if there is a possibility that a snake can escape in a certain way, they eventually will do so, out of boredom if nothing else. I actually had a corn climb the wire for her temperature probe and get out that way.

My male Dumerils will never even look at his lid, but our new female seems obsessed with hers. So i'd be very wary of that 'remote possibility'. I'll look at the cage designs and see what I can do. I'm an engineer, so we'll be able to figure something out.

Ok, after taking a look, I would say that the best course would be to get some angle iron or angle aluminum the length of the cage. You would want to screw that into the melanine on the top and bottom. The width would need to be an inch or half inch wider than the melamine so it overlaps the door area and provides a wider blockage than the channels the door sits in.

The inner door should be no issue for you, as the outer door will block it from coming out of the track. The outer door has no backup to hold it in, and creating that extra lip would keep it from being forced off track. No snake is going to exert that much force just to move a door, unless you're keeping eastern indigos.

All you will need is a power drill, the right size of drill bit, screws, and about $15 worth of angle metal. If you wanted to, you could even do the metal all the way around the front; a black cage with a silver front rim would look sexy. Just cut the metal corners to the right measurements, and enjoy some snake bling.

Lemme know what you think, and if we need onother solution, I'll try to help out.

My dum is in a cage with sliding glass doors. They can slide them open without the lock but I would be surprised if a snake could ever manage to lift the entire piece of glass and pop it out. I could see them getting a corner up but the glass wont come out that way.
My snake is almost 7ft and I've had no problems at all.
If your really that worried the pencil option sounded like a good one.

Oh, lol, I misunderstood. If those are glass fronts, then you have nothing to worry about. I thought they were plastic. In that case, definitely just go to the hobby section of most stores, get a length of wooden dowel that will fit in the track, cut it a half inch shorter than the exposed track area, and drop it in.

I thought you were worried that a snake could force the door out the front by pushing on it, lol. Plastc maybe, but glass...nope. The dowel trick should 100% cover you. People do it with sliding glass patio doors all the time. Good call guys, and sorry for the misunderstanding.

Actually your recommendation is excellent. I did it and it works. Thanks!
