Shipping on Delta

sflaskamp Jan 22, 2011 10:23 AM

I am working on becoming a known shipper with delta. They told me that i need a site inspection. Does anyone know what that is all about and what they are inspecting?

They are checking to make sure you are not making any bombs in your living room! It's a joke for an inspection. I offered to show them my snake room and they didn't even want to go in there.

I would be willing to bet that it's mostly just for the purposes of making sure you're not using someone else's address...

It seems to me that they can use a lot of different types of things to ensure the address is correct (i.e. phone bills, insurance, etc.) and it would be a lot cheaper for them to do it that way as well.

The site inspection probably depends on the actual person doing it. Some may be very diligent and others lazy (or scared of snakes, etc.) I wouldn't be a bit surprised if some cut the inspection short to allow them their own free time...

I myself would like to get Delta certified and will set it up. After the inspection takes place I will post all about it.

What about fees, ect? How much is it and is it an annual thing? Fees, inspection, ect.?

Mine was over 10 years ago and had no fees associated with it.

Even with a change of address, I have not been inspected since.

Mine was the month after 9-11 also.
They only want to verify the address on the form and your Drivers license matches up with your street address.
My "inspector" showed up at my house, (and he knew me) and rang the doorbell and I answered, and then said hi, and walked away.
I later asked him (when I was picking up some snakes,) why didn't he come in, he said, hell no, I don't want to see any snakes! LOL!

I recently had my "known shipper" status revoked because Delta could not confirm me as a business, after being approved for about a year. This is true, because I do not have a business license (just a hobbiest). I called them to try to figure out how to get myself reinstated, and they told me that snake shippers no longer need to be a known shipper. I figure rules were getting tighter, not looser. I haven't tried to ship yet, so I am wondering what will happen if I do.

Anybody else run in to this?

I had heard this rumor recently also so this thread made me call Delta's 1-800 number.

I was told that we no longer need to be a "Known Shipper" to ship venomous snakes.

I asked if this was due to the new cargo scanning process and she said she didn't know.

Just called delta and they told me the same thing, no longer required to be a known shipper to ship venomous snakes

Wow! Kind of interesting to see up to the day changes the same time the thread is being discussed... talk about being current!

I just wonder if one hand is speaking to the other in Delta, and if there will be problems/confusion if a non-known shipper arrives at their local airport and tries to ship venomous.

If anyone happens to try this, please post your experiences here.

Also, if anyone finds any written documentation that you don't need to be a known shipper, please post a link.

I'm pretty sure the rule change came with the merger with Northwest Airlines, who didn't require "known shipper" status.
