Spilotes subspecies

jonasgn Mar 08, 2011 03:11 PM

Hi all.

I will get a trio of Spilotes pullatus next week. I have worked with the species before in a zoo, but havn`t owned any myself.

It´s very difficult to find info on them and especially regarding the different subspecies.

Can anyone tell me the names of the subspecies? and most important where in the distribution area they are from?

Thanks a lot
Jonas

Hi!

The various subspecies are listed here:

http://www.eol.org/pages/962099

... but without mentions of their respective areas. However, one could imagine mexicanus be the northernmost ssp and that both taxa described by Amaral are found in Brazil.

Benjamin

Hi again!

Having search my book-shelf, the best suggestion I can make is that you put your hands on a copy of "Snakes of Honduras" by Wilson & Meyer. It features for all species, including Spilotes, useful taxonomic comments.

Hope that helps.

Benjamin
