sweet thermostat for room temp control

jgragg Mar 25, 2011 01:29 PM

I just found a very useful product, I thought I'd share:

Lux WIN100 programmable outlet thermostat

Perfect for managing (or backing-up) space heaters or window AC units for your hobby room. Nice because you don't have to fuss with separate timer and thermostat. Costs about $30. You plug it in the wall and plug your heater or AC into the front of it - Google it for a picture.

Cheap insurance against run-away space heaters - a "when, not if" event that can be a real disaster.

Cheers,
Jimi

Nice one! What is the max amps?

I found some inexpensive, compact thermostats online - plug into wall, plug heater into thermostat - but they were preset, and not for herp-related temps. The one you have is much better.

Then there is this one - bi-metal sensor. But you have to run wires to it (doesn't just plug in). $13. And the differential is rather hi, like 8 deg. But it is still a good device for a high limit safety. The picture is acually larger than the device.

Hi Mark,

I think it's 15 amps. That's what the manual says. The manufacturer is pretty uptight-sounding..."use only under these specific and limited circumstances..." and I'm so ignorant about electricity I have no idea if they're doing a CYA or if it is really that critical. Luckily, I don't need to go outside their parameters.

This model has some presets that would be OK, maybe a little cool, for a montane room. But like I said before, it's the easiest thing in the world to program.

I'm running an oil-filled Delonghi radiator. Nice not to hear a fan.

Cheers,
Jimi
