I posted this on the MS Forum, too.

Yesterday afternoon I found a little snake among the leaf litter. It was about 12" long, and at the time thought it was a copperhead (I couldn't tell, but thought it had the arrow-shaped head...). After searching for info and looking at photos, now wondering if it was a milk snake based on inconsistencies: it was skinny not fat; had a dorsal line along its back that "divided" the sides into distinct patterns. Couldn't get a picture of it.

Anyone else have snake issues? Can they be dangerous for my babies, which are maybe 2" - 3"?

Did you check this page?

Copperheads a pretty distinctive.

We get loads of Dekay's snakes around here.

Thanks! No, I didn't check -- guess that was too obvious . My guess, just from looking at the photos & descriptions: brown snake. At least I'm feeling more confident that it wasn't venomous (ie, copperhead).

We have a lot of neat snakes in LA! In all, think I've only seen 3 or 4 different kind in the wild. But then, I like the 4-legged reptiles...

I find it helpful to know what the venomous snakes in my region look like (much shorter list) so that when I come across a snake I can quickly know whether it is venomous or not.

I like that logic!
