High Black Reticulated Gila

Gsc May 05, 2011 04:07 PM

Here's some pics of my High Black Reticulated Gila Monster...I tried washing her off before the pics (sorry- she's still a dirty lizard)-lol. She bred a nice looking (regular colored) male a few days ago... I wish I had a high black male to go with her!

Enjoy...

It would not be wise to even attempt to breed a specimen that thin. It has no fat reserves. I'm not one to overfeed heloderms but I'de build up some weight on her and try a breeding next year. Chances are a pregnancy won't occur in the shape she's in but if it happens it could jeopardize her health....just my opinion.

Yeah, I have seen so many overweight gilas in captivity I was trying to keep mine a tad thinner. I'm bulking her up some- I really don't mind she doesn't go... I thought "she" was a "he" (big head size) ...we'd thrown my buddy's gila in with "him" to see if his was a male or not and well, my "he" was a "she"... Thinking mine was a male I really wasn't too worried about him being thin.

I generally keep my males bordering on lean and my females well fed but not fat. Over the last twenty years or so I've found I get a much higher rate of fertility with this combination.

Thanks Dave...I've kept Gilas & Beadeds on and off for a while BUT this is my first year "breeding" gilas... Last year I was out of town and missed my beaded clutch.

I appreciate the tips Dave. I've been feeding the high black female an adult mouse every 3 days trying to put some weight on her asap without overloading her...It's cool if she re absorbs- her health is much more important than a clutch of eggs!

Right on, and good luck in the future Gsc. Your first ever gila or beaded lizard pipping is something you will always remember. Cheers.

That is a pretty cool animal! There was just a high-black Heloderma suspectum cinctum found in Utah (I think). Published in the IRCF Magazine.

Where did that animal come from? I would love to get a hold of some nice CB high-black gilas!

Best of luck and keep up posted!
