Old sand boas...?

CBH Jul 14, 2011 02:03 PM

Hey all,

Does anyone out there have female sand boas that no longer breed? I bought an older albino female back in 2004. She had babies in 2005 but has not breed / produced since.

Just curious,
Chris

I have 3 adults that were born in 2001 produced from 2004-2009 but havent had any the last two years. not sure if any will produce this year. last year one produced just slugs no babies. first time she had any slugs. not sure if it was the male used a new unproven male on that female.

How old does a sand boa need to be to be considered old?

I've got a couple. One was sold to me as never bred the other was sold to me as a 'great breeder'.

I should have asked how old do most sand boas stop breeding
? is an eight year old sand boa to old to breed?

markg Jul 15, 2011 12:53 PM

No way 8 yrs is old for a sandboa. But a sandboa that is not in good condition, or improper cycling, or not enough food, or a male with non-viable sperm, plus the possible unknown factors and individual limitations can surely result in no production.

One breeder whose stock I saw had sandboas producing in their teens. And his setup was a plastic box, a little sand and heat tape. The end.

Shot of some wonderful rosy habitat..

8 yrs is in their prime.

With good conditioning and care, they can reproduce into their late teens early 20's. Males especially.

As for longevity, the Barkers had a male they had had for 27 years a few years ago. That is the oldest one I know of. He is a wc so exact age is unknown though.

My female in question was purchased as a large adult in 2004 (so at least 3-4 years old by then). The would put her age at greater than 11. I have tried several males over the years. I have a known 8 year old female that still produces well.

I got a yearling female in 1981 that had her first litter of 21 in 1983. She had babies every year up until she started having a inverted cloaca problem . Her last two litters were 93 and 94. She was still producing good litters but I felt like she was getting to old ?? I still have a good breeder male that was born in 1993 . I don't think ether of these cases are real extreme.
