johnii breeding

ernestplutko Aug 22, 2011 12:25 PM

What months do johnii breed and have babies? What size do they have to be? I have three johnii kept in separate cages. I had four but a female ate the male in their cage so I separated them. Johnii are great snakes to keep. They are calm and always eat when I feed them mice. They have personalities. Has anyone heard of johnii biting?

Can't help with most of the questions but I am told they need to be cooled down to stimulate breeding (60's F).

They can bite!

I have 2.1 johnii.

My female will attack anything that comes near her cage and usually starts lunging wildly whenever her cage is opened. Sometimes she does it when I enter the room. Of course, it is simply a wild feeding response, not defensive. I had a baby that bit quite a bit a few years back.

My two males are very different. My brown male is a puppy. My sunset male is a little less trustworthy. Of course, this might be because I rarely if ever handle them. I'm afraid to handle her because I think she would eat my arm.

Maybe those sunset line snakes are just mean?

My colony will drop babies almost every month of the year. Some have never been cooled and drop yearly.

As to the biting, always. I never had a calm one.

How big do they have to be to breed? I have three but they are calm and never tried to bite.

We are always cautious with our Johnii's they bite. And like Chris described lunge around their cage when we walk in the room. They are always hungry and feed readily. Just like any sand boa, their bite is not something you'll get much sympathy for. Although, Jenn had an adult female latched onto her hand for in excess of 30 minutes last week. It was pretty cool but I never thought to get a picture of it. Great snakes but not for someone who has a fear of being bitten.

I bought two more johnii today for a total of five. The three I had originally are gentle I never even thought of them biting. I was bit by a roughscaled sand boa on a finger joint a few days ago. I was surprised how hard it bit and the bloody tooth marks. Must have long teeth. I just reached in the cage to move the water dish and it nailed me. A very very good lesson to never keep poisonous snakes.

I was told by a johnii breeder that johnii have to weigh more than 500 grams and be at least three years old to breed in May after a cool-down. Info on sand boas is hard to come by.
