baby snakes not feeding

apsis Mar 03, 2012 05:31 PM

I have three Dekay's Brown snakes, one adult and two subadults. The adult eats great, but the small one's are afraid of the worms in the cage. I feed them by tongs so it might be scaring them, but I haven't noticed any more worms dissapearing. They have proper temperatures, great hiding, a water bowl, and a good substrate. Any ideas on how to get them to start eating?

There is a forum for small terrestrial snakes here with some knowledgeable people on there. I have always heard that Dekays are not very specialized feeders, so one would think earthworms would be a good choice, but I've never kept them. I did have a ground snake that ate small crickets to my surprise, so maybe try that?

I was going to post on the small terrestrial snakes forum, but it isn't very active lately. I started leaving pieces of worms on a plate overnight, and have noticed the babies eating vigorously.

I was going to say maybe the worms are too big for the smaller ones? Seems that you solved the problem, congrtas, and good luck with them. I have always loved the smaller snakes, they look great in a natural looking vivarium.
