Has anyone had a Eastern Indigo lay fertile eggs that didn't have the grainy texture to them that is usually seen?
i betcha .......the answer is NO.....
Well..not what I wanted to hear, but kinda what I thought. My 2007 female bred for me the first time. She laid 5 eggs for me Sunday night. All came out white and appeared smooth, however they seemed to turn yellow rather quickly. I have them in the incubator now and they appear to look the same as they did then. Guess I'm trying to be optimistic here..lol. Regardless I am so relieved she is fine after her 1st attempt. I have read so many horror stories!
As I mentioned she is a 2007 animal, just over 5 feet, the male is also a 2007 and approaching 7 feet. In a bitter sweet way I feel
relieved and as we say in Cleveland, wait til next year.
OLO......here in philly too.....
In my limited experience, NO...grainy spicules on the eggs are a favorable sign, and smooth that turns yellowish often equates with infertile. I would do the same as you, when in doubt, incubate. If infertile, they often go "bad" witin 8 days or so... Good luck ,and as you say, be grateful and relieved if she expelled all her eggs and you don't have to deal with a veterinary emergency as others have. That is a relatively small clutch of eggs...I wish you bigger, better and more granualted/spicule eggs next time around. Vic
