one more question

acid_lizard Mar 19, 2012 01:30 PM

hi this will be my last question i promise, as I am cluttering the forum with annoying questions. And I already asked this one before but I just don't think it was the right answer. When I give my nile a bath (now in room temp water) he'll evert his hemipenes for long periods at a time. Well today I was givin him his bath and he everted it and now its like stuck out, it still is and that was like an hour ago. Is it prolapsed? is it infected? Someone on here before told me that he might be going through "lizard puberty" so to speak. I really don't think thats right no offense because he's just about a year old and don't they become sexually mature at 2-3 years? I'm really thinking maybe an infection. What do you guys think? and I promise promise promise this will be my last post for at least a month

If his "unit" is out and remaining out dragging around in the cage, that is a prolapse and it's bad. You need to get it tucked back in and have it stay in and possibly a vet visit. If it stays out and gets banged up, it'll get swollen and eventually infected and can kill them. If it's just hanging out for a little while as the lizard is underwater but goes back in once he's out, it's probably ok. Water does tend to cause them to drop a deuce and their units will protrude while pushing it out, sometimes remaining out for a little bit.

Monitors, even some larger species, can hit puberty well before 2-3 years sometimes, but not always. It depends on heat, food and care level how fast they get there.

Thank you so very much for the quick response. I don't think it's prolapsed because he just rolled back up about 10 mins ago, but it was still out for almost an hour and a half though. I'm going to take him to the vet this week just incase though, but I need to find a better one, the last one I took him to to get his first check up and fecal done, didnt know hardly anything about monitors and probably just the bare min. on reptiles all together, and he is a so called "exotic" vet. Thank you so much for the response

well I soaked him a sugar water solution for a half an hour, but its still out!!! I put him in a clean rubbermaid container with a damp towel at the bottom, what else could I do? Is he looking at surgery? I feel so terrible , how did this happen? I'm a terrible monitor keeper

I don't know what to say aside from a vet visit with a qualified doctor.

But don't stop asking questions, we all ask question all the time.
