D. c. erebennus problem.

StuTennyson Jun 09, 2012 02:15 PM

Anyone ever see anything like this before or know what it is or how to treat it? Any help is appreciated. The pic is not the best but you can see something going on. The snake is a juvenile D. c. erebennus from 2011. I have 200 other colubdrids kept the same and have never seen anything like this before.

Thanks

Stu

Make sure you keep your Drymarchon on clean dry newspaper only.
It is usually caused by damp / dirty particulate bedding.

I work from home and check my cages several times per day. I keep them spotless. I use aspen shavings for bedding not newspaper though. Do you suppose this could be the cause?

Aspen bedding is difficult to keep dry and clean with messy snakes like indigos, no matter how many times you "spot clean" the wastes.
It is easier and cleaner to just change the newspaper every time he craps! Put him on paper, keep him dry and I bet he will shed out of this "skin rot" with no problems.

Yup.. I kept an indigo on cypress lined hide box for humidity and the same thing happened. She was kepted immaculate. ECCM (AlanB) warned me about it. Luckily it was caught early. Would iodine affected belly scales and place some bacitracin on it afterwards. Once/twice a week. Hopefully, it doesn't progress and after a couple of sheds it'll heal. Oddly enough, if cribos/indigos are kept on newspaper and the poop isn't cleaned immediately (one/two days) this still doesn't happen (I'm NOT saying to not clean your cages). Now I just keep them on newspapers with a plastic hide and when they're going into shed, dampened the papers to prevent retained shed/eye caps.

Dear Stu, I had similar experience as Johnnic, I had a gravid female who chose to spend a lot of time in her lay box, and she developed some scute rot/blistering. As Alan B. advised, I dried her out, still using coconut coire in her hide boxes, but not damp. She healed readily, I soaked her in water with some betadyne added. Humidity is good, but dampness on the substrate is problematic. Like several others, I use newsprint substrate, it is affordable and works well, and I change it immediately when they defecate, I am not motivated to "spot clean" due to the expense of many other substrates. Most of the time, dryer is better. However, most Colubrids work hard to remain hydrated, so I try to increase humidity, and I also soak them frequently when cleaning etc. I am told skin lesions/blisters are not uncommon in wild indigos and also kingsnakes...too damp for their own good? Appreciate all the help. Not too sure about the toe fungus though. I had jungle rot once that kinda looked similar. I put my indigo on paper and he seems to like it. Has to wear reading glasses though! Thanks everybody!

Can't be "zonata disease". Got them from a reliable source! Lol!!
