adult texas caging

SteveU Jul 23, 2012 06:17 PM

Hi all,
I just got a baby Texas Indigo but am already planning future habitat needs. I have an opportunity to get a 4' x 26' x 15" Vision cage complete with a radiant heat panel and thermostat for a great price. If I furnish it sparsely, would this be sufficient for the snake as an adult?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Steve

steve, a 4' cage would be WAY to small for an adult indigo. & as far as heat panel, etc. goes, you'd just be wasting your money as they do best at simple ambient room temps. years ago, i built an 8' cage using 1/4'' screening & my unicolors did very, very well in it, producing many clutches. not to mention that it's nice to see them stretch out & explore. mho.......

Thanks very much for the advice and the pic. I'll hold off and get a big cage down the road. I have a few "step-up" sizes I can use in the meantime.

yeah steve, if you're handy, you can build a nice cage yourself or maybe you know someone who can. as big as my cage is, it only cost about $100 to build. made of 1 x 3's w/ a styrofoam bottom, it is actually very light & very well ventilated. those overpriced commercial cages lack decent ventilation which is critical for a happy critter!!! anyway, good luck & much success......
