breeding season winding down

steve fuller Jan 05, 2013 10:11 AM

January 5, 2013. Chris Dossena generously loaned one of his male Eastern indigos for breeding with Alison. Both snakes hatched out here. She shed yesterday and I introduced him into her cage this morning. This pair also apparently mated early last month. They are a very nice red-throat pair and should produce fine hatchlings. Other Easterns here began breeding in late October.

When is the "deadline" for breeding easterns? I have two girls that are ready to go but I am reluctant because I fear its too late in the season to breed them. Any thoughts?

I've had good matings occur as late as early February for Easterns. I believe male should be kept relatively cooler than female, with temps dipping into high 60's at night. I also reduce lights to less than two hours. Expect male to probably go off feed during breeding season. At least one breeder I respect apparently does none of this.

Introducing a female just after she sheds and combating a reluctant male with a sparring partner may help to tilt things in your favor.

Thanks for the reply Steve and good luck with your easterns this breeding season. I believe I have one gravid girl and I'm hoping for two more. Does anyone else have any input?

Hi everyone,
i have two gravid girls, a red phase & a black phase, due to lay very soon. I started to introduced the pairs in October, left them together for several days then separated to feed & once they were all full i re introduced them.
i keep doing this until the females are obviously gravid. i use this method with all my snakes not just dry`s.

This is my first breeding of Easterns so hoping for two healthy clutches. Good luck to you all with your breedings this year.

Andy.
