East Coasters?

bisch7 Sep 04, 2013 01:02 PM

I was wondering if anyone here goes herping on the east coast? I am originally from California and have only herped west coast and the south but never the upper east coast. I recently moved to Maryland and was hoping someone could help me out with some good spots, as of right now I have only found an earth snake and that was when I was out running and I didn't have my camera.I know this isn't the right forum but I tried posting in the field obs forum but people there couldn't tell me anything other then " you will find that Maryland is a very boring state compared to CA..." super help.

Sorry I can't be of more help, having never herped the East Coast north of Florida, but some of us who are more hard-core field guys spend a lot of time on here. Check it out, introduce yourself, and read the FAQs.

Ha!Ha! it's true, Maryland is a little boring herp wise, but if you just want to see what we do have here, check out Great Falls Park & the C&O canal. This has been one of my favorite spots since I was a kid. The park itself is one of the most beautiful spots in Maryland, even if you don't find anything, it's worth a look, but there's plenty of snakes, turtles, even a few lizards. It is a State Park however, so any collecting is strictly illegal.

If you think Maryland is boring try herping in NY. More specifically, Long Island. I just poked around in Honesdale PA for a week and couldn't find a single snake. I love seeing the pictures of field collecting that some of these guys post up. Especially Tim Spuckler. Yeah, NY is boring too. Eastern milks, delay snakes and garter snakes. Now days if you see an eastern hog here, it's a big find. Good luck. Mike Panichi

Up here in Mass we have very limited selection but as far as objects of interest here is a small list of snakes Ive caught in MD.
Coastal Plains milks
Eastern Milks
Intergrade Milks
Eastern Kings
Mole kings
Black rats
Corns
timber rattlers
I think we have like 2-3 of those up here but MD you can find some really nice stuff! BUT of course you gotta know where to look! No substitute for field time!
