What rating of scale for hognose?

markg Jan 09, 2015 01:39 PM

I need to purchase a scale to weigh hognose snakes and other small snakes.

Is a 2000 Gram scale enough for adults? What about a 1000 Gram scale? What do you guys use? Thanks.

Does any body have a hognose over 1000 grams. Whats the most for Mexican hogs? I can't imagine one over 1000 grams. hahahahahahahaha

I have never seen but have heard of females at 1000 grams plus. That would be a very rare occasion. I do have a couple of females that are close to 900 grams and even that is HUGE in terns of hognose snakes. And incidentally, these females are very poor producers. My best producing females are under 350 grams.

It cant hurt to have a 2000 gram scale. Being in construction for 20 years has taught me that it is better to have a tool and not need it than to need a tool and not have it.

Thanks Gregg, any idea of kennerlyi?
With the animals I study in the field. Large indiviuals are not the best breeders, they seem to have another task in the colony. We see what you see, smaller individuals being the main breeders. Thanks again

i personally used a 1 - 7,000g digital scale. it comes with a nice plastic bowl that most smaller reptiles fit in, and only cost about $30 shipped. i'm on my second one in about 6 yrs. i have used it for everything from nephrurus geckos, to hognose, to old world rat snakes, to bp's. i also have reef tanks and it has helped me in weighing out additives. i would rather pay a couple more bucks and have one for multiple uses instead of limiting myself to things under 2k grams. to each their own....

Thanks for the info. I went on Amazon and selected a 2000g scale with 0.1 gram resolution. I figured just in case I want to use it for other animals that might go over 1000g.

Originally I was looking on lab supply sites. Way too expensive for my intended purpose. Amazon prices on the other hand are so good. Even in the worst case if it failed in a year, still worth it. $16 for a digital scale with stainless steel surface. I mean, really.

I have an old triple beam scale, had it for decades. Works fine. I was never was into weighting stuff when discussing size, I have lots of tape measures. I am old I guess.
In reality, two 30 inch females could be 100 grams different from eachother and still be perfectly healthy.
