Planning Living Will - dog question

tigereyes May 27, 2011 10:30 PM

Mark and I are planning our living wills - i.e., what happens if we get hit by a truck.

How much money should we designate for the care of Steed and Emma? Is there a rule of thumb for how much it will cost per year to maintain them? I know expenses go up as they get older.

Yes, Pam, we know they're supposed to go back to you. We're just trying to figure out how much money to allocate.

How much money should we designate for the care of Steed and Emma?

***We, just last week updated our trust and living will. We have a executor named to make decisions regarding the dogs and we have allotted 12,500.00 for that purpose. Of course, we have a lot more dogs than you guys do. Our money is to cover any needed expenses, including travel, boarding, etc. with anything left over going to the exector.
***In the case of Steed & Emma, I would of course, be more than willing to bring them here to live out their lives with us.

We have ours set up with a lump sum going with each dog up front (to cover any expenses of getting the dog relocated, cared for until arrangememts are made, etc) and then an additional $1000 per year between the dogs current age and age 13 to cover any on-going expenses. This way they are cover if they are a 3 year old or a 10 year at the time this would be needed. We also have a person specified for each dog who has agreed to keep them if something should happen to us.
For those who have not yet planned ahead, you really need to. It is very sad when this is not done and relatives have no interest in the dogs or don't understand how important our dogs are to us.

Those are some very good ideas Sheila. I had not given any thought to allocating funds for each dog. Although I do have two daughters who both know how much my dogs mean to me, I think they would see to it they are well cared for and place them accordingly.

Thanks for bringing it up on this message board.

Another thing that is very important is: If the two of you do not come home for what ever reason, that a responsible person near by can get in and take the dogs out of your home. That way they are safe and not taken by animal authorities like SPCA. Not sure if they is against the law, but I have made provision for just that scenario. Also leave an emergency number in plain site to see.

I have set up a Pet Trust for my dogs by an attorney.

The trust is financed by a sum of money in a special account at my bank. I have two people who have agreed to pick up my dogs and get them where they need to go as trustees All my current dogs have all have someone to take them.

Independent of the trust I have two people locally who will care for them, notify my trustees and assist with pickup. I have a list of who-to-call on the refrigerator and each local person has a copy and access to the house. I also have emergency information in plain view in my van in case of an accident.

Hope this helps. It's great you are thinking ahead on this, it's so important.

Thank you very much, everybody. All this information is hugely helpful. I'll put it into action right away.

The hardest part is making sure Steed and Emma will be kept in the style to which they have become accustomed - i.e., royalty.

***Actually they would join a whole HERD that seems to be living under the same sense of entitlement
