7 day old cockatiel

chrisf2956 Aug 07, 2009 07:42 PM

I have a 7 day old cockatiel that has cut his own leg with his toe nails. I rushed him to the vet and they have bandaged him up but the vet said the skin is just falling apart. He orginally wanted to stitch it up. He is not used to dealing with birds this young and does not know if this is normal. Does anybody know? I am very worried about the little guy and would appreciate any help.

This doesn't sound normal. Is this an actual avian vet you are seeing? Both of the avian vets we deal with work with birds basically from hatching on up so they are quite used to what is and isn't normal. If your vet is not used to seeing young birds I would definitely suggest trying to find one that is used to young birds. If you need help locating another one in your area let me know and I will see if I can find any others.

I would appreciate the help. I looked online and the one that I found close said he did not deal with birds and recommended the vet I took the baby too. He said that vet did see birds but it appears he has only treated older birds. This is my first experience with a baby and I am unsure of myself. I have tried to research and have found a lot of info. but sometimes they contradict each other.
What info. do you need? I live in Ottawa Kansas. Small Town but fairly close to bigger cities.

I have listed two that should be within about an hour or so of you. If they are too much father than that let me know and I will see if I can come up with any others. I have taken my birds to one of them and know many others who use the other so they are both wonderful vets!! I haven't however taken newly hatched to them but I do believe they both work with very young as well as adult birds.
