Retained sperm?

snakekate Jul 13, 2016 11:15 AM

How common is it for kings to retain sperm and lay viable eggs years later? I personally have not had this happen,or even a slug clutch, but my collection is small. Currently one of my kings is looking very gravid. She has not been bred this year or last. I am curious if it is likely a bunch of slugs or if I should prepare for possible fertile eggs, as she did have clutches the years prior. As it is, she has a few nest box choices regardless. Any advice/experiences?

Yes you should put in a deep nest box. No way to know what will happen. I have had non-bred females swell up like they were gravid, only to return to normal size later. I called it "reabsorption" but I do not think that is an accurate description of what is happening

Thanks for the response. I was wondering if she would reabsorb, she has done that before, but this time shes just huge. Time will tell.
