Just curious what you all think, My daughter is 3 and her her own alligator, she has had allison since she was 1 1/2 years old so they have been growing up together. Allison is now 3 ft long and very docile. My daughter has been leash training her for sometime now and Allison is very good on the leash. My son which is now 1 1/2 years old has his own rock python. The snake is now 3 ft long and is also docile toward my son. He likes to carry his pet snake around and has yet to be bitten or struck at. He has not hurt the snake either. I am sure most people don't agree with this, but they are my kids and have been around this stuff and will continue to be around this until they move out. I have caimen alligators geckos and snakes in my house so hy can't they have their own. By the way, my daughter picked out Allison herself at the pet store! here is a pic of my daughter with Allison

Hi there,

This is just my honest opinion, but isn't an alligator kind of inappropriate as a pet for a kid, especially one so young? What is she going to do with it when it reaches full size? As it is, it looks like the gator wants to bite and gators have an extremely strong bite.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, this is just my initial impression. I admit that I don't know much about crocodilians.

That is what I am here for. they only grow an average an inch a month for the first 5 years. Then they slow down. I believe they both will grow up together rather well. This one alligator has never tried to bite. Thank you for your concern.
Any others.

sir your ignorance annoys me, when that alligator becomes full grown it will no longer be docile...NO MATTER WHAT!becides a 3 year old is way to young to be NEAR an alligator on bite and your daughter will be dead!!!!!AND your son is way to young to have a rock python A 1 1/2 is way to young to have anything except mabye a frog or gecko. YOUR LACK OF JUDGMENT COULD CAUSE YOUR CHILDRENS DEATH!!!!!!!THINK A LITTLE HARDER ABOUT THE RISK AND WHATS AT STAKE!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to say I think its awesome that you are introducing your kids to reptiles at such an early age. As long as you provide supervision and the animals are being properly cared for I see nothing wrong with this. Just don't allow your children to get under the impression that they cannot and will not be bit (thats what happened to Brandon Bowers and look at him) thats when bad things happen. Post more pics......Scott Wahlberg

Is that how the wooly mammoth came into being??? Wow... (Brandon you know I love you). But I would agree with Scott. Venomous snakes are a different story, but I mean if you teach the kids at an early age and supervise handlings with animals that are technically harmless, then nothing but a better understanding of the animal by the child can result. Thank you. All of my enclosures have locks on them that can only be opened by me or my wife. So there is no way my kids can play with them without supervision. I wish everyone could see it this way.

Thanks again,

Michael

err... don't get me wrong, i adore reptiles and think that many of them can make wonderful pets.

many, but not all, and they are certainly not for all ages, in my opinion. supervised or not, your son or daughter could suffer quite a grievous injury before you'd even have time to react.

i hope you and yours are not darwin awards candidates in the making. if you've misled yourself by anthropomorphizing these animals and thus arriving at the conclusion that they "love" you or your children, you are sadly mistaken.

you asked for opinions, and there you go.

michael675 Jan 16, 2004 04:59 PM

hey, to each his own. I respect your opinion the same as a positive aspect. Thank you, all though I beg to differ. Good luck with all your herps

The only reason I read this crap was because I heard my name was mentioned, and my opinion is this:

I don't give a rip if the gator eats your daughter and the rock python swallows your son, but if you want to put a leash on an animal, get a dog. Gators deserve more respect than that.

To Scott and Andy:
Getting bit a lot isn't necessarily bad. Look at Andrew G. He gets bit by venomous stuf every six months and he's pretty cool. Looking forward to some cool trips with you homos this summer.

P.S. Andy, change your voicemail message and start returning people's calls and e-mails!!!!

maybe someone should put a leash on you jackass. sometimes people should keep their retarded opinions to their retarded self.

metalshrek Jan 18, 2004 11:09 AM

Retarted? If you only knew!!! I work with kids that have mental disabilities and I assure you that many would be offended by what you have said. I am of a much lower class than "retarted" people. You, on the other hand are an adult posting on the "herps and KIDS" forum that your toddler owns an alligator. The only reason I came here is because two adults who also should not be posting here mentioned my name (in good humor). I think if you are looking for an example of humans acting stupid, click here. It's nothing personal, man! At least I didn't criticize your irresponsible parenting. I even said you could do what you want with your kids. Exposing kids to reptiles is a great idea, but use some smaller herps (you aren't from Australia by any chance, are you?). I just think anyone who puts a leash on a reptile obviously doesn't know much about them. They are not like dogs and cats, requiring human companionship. They don't cuddle. They don't care whether you love them or not. They want their food, water, mates, optimum climactic situations, and simply to be left alone. on one hand you could even say they are not even pets. I consider them live specimens for observation.

last i checked, in your first post, you asked what we thought, and he told you.

the tone and language use in your reply to him doesn't terribly surprise me, however. i mean, you *do* allow a toddler to play with an alligator.

or do you? it's been a while, but i *think* that i just *might* smell a troll... the pic would be easy enough to come up with on a vacation to a florida tourist-trap or some such.

michael675 Jan 20, 2004 04:39 PM

my tone and language. common, he was pretty arrogant in stating my kids should more or less be eatin buy our pets. Troll, I have 2 very wonderful kids cool guy who love to be around all of our herps. I just asked for opinions, not to be called a child mo, I guess some people just don't get it, do they. Get a clue. I have pics of my children on here because I am a very proud father. Not some freak who gets off taking pics of little kids.

i dunno where you got the idea that i was calling you a child molester. you came up with that one yourself.

i was only stating that, just because someone shows a pic of a girl with an alligator, that doesn't necessarily mean that the person owns an alligator, as such a picture could easily be taken in numerous touristy places such as one finds in florida where you can "pose with the alligator" or what have you. also i said that such a picture, accompanied by statements such as you have made, could possibly exist merely for inflammatory purposes.

or not. i was merely giving out a possibility.

that is all.

Pretty much says it all, doesn't it

unchikun Jan 20, 2004 08:00 PM

are you unfamiliar with the vocabulary or what? allow me to quote from dictionary.com:

"tourist trap
n.
A place, such as a shop or resort area, that offers overpriced goods and services to tourists."

such as having your kids' pics taken with exotic animals. you see it everywhere in florida. has absolutely nothing at all to do with perversion, unless you're in on something that i'm not.

I am new to this forum and already I hate it. You are an idiot for one. and Unckikun should reword his statement because the way he wrote it, it sounds like he called michael675 a child molester. What a waste of a perfectly good forum. do not bother to reply to this because I will not be back on this forum again.
