Softshell in pond?

twisted Apr 13, 2004 07:19 PM

I have just built a rubber lined pond, will a softshell tear or puncture the liner? I live in central Fl will he be able to live outdoors all winter in a 2 ft. deep pond.

No problem at all. Just give him some sand substrate in the bottom so that he can bury himself in it. Also be careful about putting other softies in with him they can be aggressive toward eachother. You also have to have a barrier to keep him from wandering off.

yeah the softshell prolly won't hurt the liner but he needs sand and the sand might cause scratches in the liner.
I'd add the sand but check now and then to make sure you aren't leaking much water.

and yes make a wall or fence around the pond or the turtle will end up in the street somewhere.

A friend of mine actually added sand in shallow plastic tubs. Then filled the pond. Worked great (until the turtles dug it all out and on to the pond floor. LOL) It didn't damage the liner at at all so I am sure it will be fine.

I Just wanted to reinforce what was said about the barrier, I just lost a 3 inch SS to am 18 inch high wire fence I am going to add a top to the fence that over hangs the inside about 6 inches
