Peacock Day Gecko Housed w/ Jackson's Chameleon?

DavidY May 29, 2005 11:23 PM

I know that mixing different species of reptiles is generally a bad idea, but I have a Phelsuma quadriocellata quadriocellata and a Chamaeleo jacksoni (currently in separate enclosures). The C. jacksoni is in a 65 gal Reptarium w/ live plants, a mercury vapor UV basking lamp, and a misting system. The gecko is currently in a 10 gal aquarium w/fake plants, bamboo, and reptibark substrate (recently picked him up at a reptile show) until I can build him a decent vivarium. I was wondering, since the gecko and the chameleon's habitat conditions are so similar (temp, humidity, lighting, etc), could they be housed together, at least temporarily?

More importantly what are the sizes of both animals?

The gecko is a little little less than 2/3rds the length of the chameleon, and is too big to fit in the chameleon's mouth. I'm more worried about any aggression between the two.

Chameleons are notoriously aggressive towards their own species (both male and female) but I have no idea how they react towards different species. Day geckos aren't nearly as territorial but males can be aggressive. Unless there is an emergency I wouldn't house them in the same tank.

well chameleons dont really care about any other animals in their cage, especially a little jacksons with a peacock. and the day gecko wont really care about any other animal unless its a male of its own species. i kept two adult standings(10 in long) with an adult ambanja blue panther who was big enough to eat fuzzies in a 30g x high. they were always happy and minded their own business. they d be perfectly fine as far as aggression, but they come from different environments. your jacksons needs it cool and the day gecko needs it hot. the day geckos a lot hardier and can tolerate a wider range though. a 10g is more than enough space for a par of peacocks. but the best way to learn is to try it out if you are confident that he wont eat the gecko.
