Saw an anole outside today

drzrider Jan 08, 2006 04:32 PM

I was checking on my goats today and saw something unexpected. There wan an anole running on a tree in the goat pen. I live in NC and it was about 55 degrees today. It was below freezing the last few nights and yesterdays high was in the low to mid 40s. I had no idea that one would be out in January.

It was dark and not bright green like I see in the summer. Sorry, I didn't have my camera with me to take its picture.

is it possible that it was someones pet? its really hard to believe that an anole would survive those kinds of temps. more than likely it is finding its way into someones home at night. thats really cool though. i live in pennsylvania so i cant say that i have ever seen a truly wild lizard around here, just snakes,frogs/toads, and salamanders. i bet its cool to have wild lizards around your home.

Anoles don't hibernate. They stay active for the entire winter and venture out from protected caves, crevuces, and other hiding places to hunt and bask when the weather permits. They can tolerate temperatures in the 40's for surprisingly long periods of time.

I am from PA and there are wild lizards there--just not many species. there are 5 lined skinks and northern swifts and broadheads just get into SE PA I believe.

Anoles can survive low temps--i had some get away and i saw them the following summer. so the survived the winter somehow.
