So hopefully with a few days things will back to normal.

====

It is good things are returning to normal. However, your cat may take a while to trust you again. He may trust your husband more as (I HOPE) your husband has never hit and yelled and chased the cat around trying to hit him... Hitting and yelling at the cat really scared it and it is now very suspicious and scared of you.

Please never hit him again. Ever. There are other things you can do besides hitting and yelling and chasing... He is much, much smaller than you and relies on you for protection. What may not seem like a hard hit to you, may hurt him more as he is so much smaller...

If you get mad again, walk away from him. He most likely doesn't even know why you are yelling and hitting him. You will have him so scared, he will fight with everything he has to get away and hide.

If he is doing something wrong and you are calm enough not to hit him (otherwise walk away), clapping your hands loudly and saying "NO" firmly works many times as does a water mister full of water only sprayed at him (never spray in the eyes) will usually stop the behavior. Cats like water and it doesn't cause him pain. Only spray if he is bad, or he won't associate the water with stopping bad behavior.

Understand what happened with the kitten is natural for him to react that way. You put another animal suddenly in his home. Introducing new pets should be gradual, not sudden.
