As a volunteer for the Michigan Cat Rescue we are going through the same thing with the sweetest kitten. By the way, CreamPuff is GEORGEOUS!!!!
For Hope it seemed to be sudden onset but sometimes with a housefull of cats and some in foster things get missed. There are only 5 of us and most of the cats are form high-kill shelters or ones found on the streets so we don't have any medical history on them and have no idea what they been exposed to but most have compromised immune systems due to malnutrition before we even get them. We do the appropriate testing, vaccinations and at age appropriate time have them fixed if they haven't been adopted out. The expenses for most of the ill cats is HUGE and comes out of our own pockets since we have to pay general public prices for the veterianry care.
I commend you on your efforts and I am sure CreamPuff will love you forever for knowing she could be saved and was worth saving. Too many people jsut "dispose" of them as being a waste of moeny and time and it is so sad because they all teach us soemthing no matter where they came from or how ill they are. Whether they live long happy lives or short but meaningful ones. Keep up your meaningful and inspirational work!
