Crocodile geckos, red mites

Shadowwolf Sep 18, 2008 10:59 AM

Is Ivermectin an effective way to treat these tiny, delicate animals for mites? That's what a vet prescribed to me, but I have heard horror stories and am unsure as to whether this is the right way to go about things.

What would you do?

Never heard of that treatment, though I haven't looked into mites much, never had them. But I have heard mites will come off using olive oil or Vaseline dabbed on them, they just pretty much suffocate and then fall off, :x Just watch that the gecko doesn't get any, and keep it well-hydrated.

I have used Ivermectin with out any problems to kill red mites on a number of different lizard species, including Crocodile geckos. Use a Q-tip to get it into the hard to reach areas like the tail scales, and then pull as many of them off (or out) as you can with pointed tweezers. The commercial mite sprays seem to work just as well using this method and may be safer.

Don't let your gecko ingest ivermectin though!
Not sure how it goes in geckos, but it can be deadly for Bearded dragons. Obviously, they're very different, but generally ivermectin used in horses as anti-parasite.

I know many people who've had success with it on snakes, applied externally as the other poster described.
