Blue Iguanas???????

RoadSpawn Jan 12, 2012 12:43 AM

Are there two types of blue iguanas? If so, what is the info. on each. Also, I've heard PetCo was selling some blue iguanas. Is this true?

For those that have blue iguanas, how are they doing and is there any pics of adult blue iguanas?

While it is true that in 2011 some blues came in to PetCo most have now turned green....The Red Iguanas are red in most cases due to diet manipulation and in less than 12 months become normal looking Green Iguanas also..I believe that the cheap blues sold by PetCo were the same....The only TRUE axanthic or blue iguanas I know of that have been proven are here..It is a simple recessive morph similar to an albino.....thanks

Hello,
I have seen two types of red iguanas. The first type has a green belly and the other is completely red. I have seen adult reds without any trace of green but have not seen adult reds with green bellys. Are the ones with green the ones given an altered diet? Thanks for you reply.

Some of the petco blues are still blue. This is Tazumal. I bought him from Petco on June 5. I actually bought two but both had a lot of health problems and despite our best efforts and lots of vet bills, Arwen died at the end of September. One thing I looked for when I bought both of them was very blue bellies.

My friend who works with wild iguanas said that she thinks these were shipped very very young. Tazumal had to have spent a month in quarantine yet was only 3 inches SVL when I got him.

Here is a picture of how he looks now. He is at least nine months old. I snapped this one with my phone when we took him to the garden center recently. He had a wonderful time and seems to have a very sweet disposition. It's still possible that he will turn, but so far, so blue.

My little blue from petco is still blue. I have had him for six months or so. Here is a pic of him

I wonder if they feed some South American iguana a certain diet to make them blue like that... I know a lot of South American population do get blue like that...I have seen one and some pictures. Very pretty animal! But you can't beat Tom Crutchfield's animals!

It will be interesting to see how the Petco blues look as adults. I wish my Arwen had lived but here are some more pictures of Tazumal. I have been out of town for a couple of weeks but will take new ones when I get home. He really does not have a trace of green anywhere on his body. Since he has been eating the same thing my other igs have always eaten for the past eight months, it can't be anything to do with diet.

Paradon Jan 23, 2012 05:50 PM

What kind of stuff they feed them to make the color that blue?

Theboiyo187 Jan 24, 2012 10:44 PM

Although its likely to be from a diet we are not really sure which I would highly doubt. I look at it as there are thousands of iguanas and natural wild breeding they found the blue an albinos after there own self breeding in nature. Unlike someone who is selective breeding.

Paradon Jan 25, 2012 01:33 AM

I know Allen Repashy sells stuff that enhances the colors...

typherp Jan 25, 2012 10:37 PM

Blue green iguanas from Petco are not color fed. These are true axantic as they come from Blue adults. I think people should only state the facts and not speculate.

Really Jan 26, 2012 04:13 PM

Ty, I don't think anyone is going to believe us until our iguanas are adults....

Really Jan 26, 2012 04:16 PM

Also, there is absolutely no food on the planet that can turn a green iguana completely blue. Some foods might be able to enhance an animal's natural colors but it isn't going to do this:

Thank You Ty! I'm losing my mind reading these. KB

P.S. Maybe I can get some of the stuff to Blue up my hybrids

typherp Jan 26, 2012 10:39 PM

When these blue green iguanas were first appearing at Petco, I was skeptical like everyone else, so I contacted people at the corporate office and they confirmed that they have seen the adults and they are BLUE. Since then, I have acquired 4 from different states (2 from Illinois, 1 each from California and Texas) and I am convinced these are real, genetic axanthic green iguanas. Like Susan said, no food in the world can turn a green iguana to look like these as long as we had them (more than 6 months.) If anyone can prove to us that any of these Petco blue iguanas turned green, please provide unquestionable proof!

Paradon Jan 26, 2012 11:14 PM

Then I might have to get one for myself... They look so cool as adults!

Really Feb 01, 2012 06:27 PM

I can't wait to see Tazumal as an adult. I just hope he keeps his sweet nature. Here is a new picture from today. He is at least nine months old because I got him June 5 and his records show a month in quarantine.

The brown you see on his dewlap is what I see when he's due for a shed. It gets brownish, then white and then he sheds.

I'm going to start a new thread that will have a good shot of his incredible belly. Take a look!

Really Feb 03, 2012 09:50 AM

He looks pretty blue already. lol That's just it. If I were using some sort of secret color food, my hybrids would be a lot bluer too.
