Caiman hybrid question

yautja901 Mar 12, 2012 03:20 PM

Can an American alligator(Alligator mississippiensis) cross with a Black caiman (Melanosuchus niger)?
I have been told that Yacare caimans (Caiman yacare) can successfully cross with Spectacled caimans ((Caiman crocodilus) thus producing offspring such as the Diamond caiman. Is this true and can the same be done with a Black caiman and an American alligator thus producing a hybrid ("allicamian" or "caimagator"?
Deepest apologies if this is in the wrong forum and in no way shape or form am I advocating hybrids.
Thanks in advance.

Unlikely. Only snakes can hybridize with more distant species.
American Alligators cannot hybridize with caimans. They aren't anywhere near closely related.

Alligators are caimans. There are three groups of crocodilians, and they are caimans, crocs proper, and gharials with a single species.
That said, I dont know what can hybridize with what.
I do know that the gene pool of Cuban crocodiles (rhombifer) has been influenced by crossings with Crocodilus acutus

I was thinking the same thing. Since the American alligator and Black caiman are both in the Family Alligatoridae, you'd think there just might be some remote potential for them to breed. Especially having a black caiman and a leucistic or albino American alligator produce offspring just to see what develops. I have yet to see a pic of an alligator and black caiman side by side (or housed in the same enclosure for that matter).
