The best a snake can be expected to do in the wild is produce two offspring that make it to sexual maturity and a successful surviving pair of it's own. If they did any better than that, you would find the population rapidly increasing. That's just not gonna happen around here. Captive breeding provides a much higher chance of offspring making it to maturity. Releasing them at that point would give them a much better chance of survival. I have been involved in several captive breeding and habitat regeneration programs for a few animals that are "at risk" with some success.
